::: ONGC to continue as I-League title sponsors :::
Today a Function was held in New Delhi to thank ONGC for their support to Indian football and its players for bringing glory to India for their recent successes in the "ONGC" Nehru Cup and the AFC Challenge Cup.
AIFF president on the occasion thanked ONGC for their support of the Nehru Cup and the I-League. He also praised the national team and chief coach Bob Houghton for achieving the qualification for the 2011 Qatar Asian Cup.
"India realized the dream of playing in Asian Cup after a long time. This was made possible by the players under the leadership of Baichung and Chief Coach Bob Houghton," Mr. Das Munhsi said.
After the success of Team India and the national team playing the big boys of Asian football in a little over two years, Mr. Das Munshi urged the corporate sector to invest in Indian football and help raise the standard.
"We need attention from the Corporate sector in terms of building infrastructure and for the preparations of the Asian Cup. We have to do well in 2011 and in the next three years we will need at least Rs 2 crore per year for the preparation," he said.
"Indian football is looking up. We are hopeful of India Under-16 team doing well in the AFC Under_16 Championship in Uzbekistan in October and then one club from the country will play in the AFC Champions League next year, so I urge the private sector to take interest in the game," he added.
In an important message the AIFF president said that preparations for the 2011 Qatar Asian Cup would start in right earnest from September after the return of Bob Houghton
"2011 is far away but we have to start from now. We have to hunt talent from all over the country, from the I-League and few other tournaments, consult the ex-players. It will be a big project and the aim is to do well in the Asian Cup."
The AIFF president also announced today that ONGC would continue to be the title sponsor of the I-League, which will go into its second edition this season. But the start of the 2nd eidtion of the I-League is still unknown. The original date of September 14 looks now unlikely...
